About
The ACM Student Chapter at BV(DU)COEP, in proud collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), successfully organized an engaging and thought-provoking seminar titled “Use of Open Data for Sustainable Community”. Delivered by the esteemed Dr. Neha Sharma, Founder Secretary of Data Science Pune, distinguished ACM Speaker, and seasoned professional at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the event drew a diverse audience of students and faculty eager to explore the transformative potential of open data.
Key Highlights:
Dr. Sharma's presentation masterfully demystified open data, positioning it not merely as raw statistics or datasets, but as a dynamic powerhouse for fostering innovation, ensuring governmental transparency, and driving profound societal impact. Attendees delved into practical strategies for harnessing both structured datasets (such as census records and environmental metrics) and unstructured sources (like social media feeds and satellite imagery) to architect intelligent urban ecosystems. These approaches enable the development of smarter cities through predictive traffic management, efficient resource allocation, and resilient infrastructure planning—all geared toward long-term sustainability.
A central theme was the pivotal role of open data in evidence-based policymaking. Dr. Sharma illustrated how accessible data empowers decision-makers to craft policies rooted in empirical evidence, minimizing biases and maximizing equitable outcomes. She underscored the importance of ethical data practices, including robust privacy safeguards, bias mitigation algorithms, and inclusive data governance frameworks, to bridge the widening chasm between cutting-edge technology and genuine human-centric needs.
To bring concepts to life, Dr. Sharma shared compelling real-world examples of urban sustainability initiatives, community Empowerment, industry transformations that demonstrated how raw data evolves into actionable insights, accelerating research breakthroughs, fueling competitive business models, and crafting tailored digital solutions that resonate with end-users.
Interactive Session and Q&A
The seminar featured an interactive Q&A segment, where participants actively engaged with Dr. Sharma on topics ranging from data accessibility challenges in developing regions to the integration of AI with open data for scalable sustainability projects. Her insightful responses sparked lively discussions, inspiring attendees to rethink data's role beyond information silos.
